The Five C’s to Getting an A
“Well, that’s a first…”
…read the subject line in a recent email from a student of mine. Feeling excited/nervous/like I was back in high school, I opened the message: Results 102.44%.
Now, I work with super driven students every day, so this may not seem like cause for the high kick and shoulder shimmy that made my 5 year old look at me sideways. But this student had come to me 10 weeks earlier with a low C in this honors class. Feeling defeated and wondering if she should drop down to the regular level (which, by the way, I’m a huge advocate of if stress and overwhelm are taking over - it can be a brilliant game-changing choice), or perhaps even quit altogether, we came up with a plan. Once she committed herself to her goal and enthusiastically began implementing the work, her test grades were, in order: 85%, 98%, 92%, and now 102.4%!
Would you like to know how she was able to go from a C to an A in 10 weeks?
After emailing her back with enough celebratory emojis to make a teenager’s eyes roll, I realized that, through my years of tutoring and coaching students, I had developed a tried and true system to helping students reach their academic potential. One that worked, in any class, at any level, when students were engaged, committed to process and purpose over achievement, and ready to take action:
Check In/get Clarity
Consolidate
get Curious
be Consistent
Celebrate!
In the coming weeks, I’m going to break down these Five C’s to Get an A and give you clear, exact action steps.
While getting an A in an honors class is an incredible feat in and of itself and can create big opportunities, the resilience, connection, sense of empowerment, and the willingness to ask for help that my students cultivate in the process are what they take with them into all facets of their academic lives and beyond. That’s the real magic.
